As the ecommerce sector continues to grow within an ever technology loving society, the pressure on delivery services promising next day delivery has become immense. More and more consumers are demanding faster deliveries, contributing to higher emissions and congested roads.

This speculative packaging project looks into the future of retail giant Amazon’s up and coming drone delivery service – Amazon Air. This service offers cleaner, faster and more efficient delivery, with current estimates from Amazon promising 30 minute order to door delivery. Putting deliveries into the sky doesn’t go without controversy. Therefore the problem to solve through this project concluded to ‘how can we present this new service to an audience that are showing resistance to new technology?’

By using the iconic Amazon box of course.

The innovative packaging would be used to package smaller items (such as those that would be delivered by drone) in the weeks before the release of the drone delivery service. Using Amazon Air’s distinctive blue branding the box is unmissable and exciting to engage with.

The biggest challenges faced throughout this project were deciding how to construct a drone out of a plain old box and also how to make it appealing to children and their families at the same time.

The limited-edition box is targeted at predominantly families with younger children, who are perhaps more tech phobic than younger generations like Millennials and Gen Z. The box can be built into a customisable drone to let the audience (particularly children) get to grips with the new machines. Furthermore, once complete, the boxes can be scanned and flown by the user through AR technology.

Internally the box is used as a canvas for helpful infographics that proactively address consumer concerns surrounding automated deliveries. The packaging helps users realise potential benefits that Amazon Air has to offer, persuading the user that the future is indeed, looking up.
