Hippocrates reminds us in this sentence the transience of life, in the face of the magnitude of the arts and knowledge.

Knowledge preexists us, exceeds us and will survive us. Faced with the impossibility of covering all knowledge, there is only one way left, passing the torch from generation to generation, each one of us contributing with what the narrow limits of its transience allow.
