This article written by Rombus Packaging discusses the increase in Eco-Friendly products and packaging, and why it’s important that businesses adapt to meet conscious consumer’s needs.

Go Green: A Growing Trend
There is no doubt about it that we are currently facing the age of one of the most difficult economic climates in the past 100 years as shown by a recent global online study. Awareness of eco-friendly products however; is increasing.

With the rise of conscious consumerism, eco-friendly products and packaging are becoming increasingly popular. A third of UK consumers claim to have concerns over the origin of products, how they are made and how they impact the environment, and millennials claim that sustainability is a high shopping priority. As sustainability is evidently now at the core of many consumers’ purchasing decisions, it is more important than ever that eco-friendly packaging and products are adopted by businesses in order to grow customer loyalty and market share.

A recent survey shows that 1 in 3 consumers prefer eco-friendly options and more than 50% of consumers oppose GMO foods. The trend of consumers’ growing environmental conscience is an interesting development as 35% of people are even willing to spend more money on eco-friendly products, and 56% were ‘slightly likely’ to consider paying the higher price.
Why has the demand for Eco-Friendly items increased?

The rise in conscious consumerism can be argued to be due to the widespread press coverage on global environmental issues such as plastic pollution in our oceans, the damage of packaging waste and the general impact our purchasing decisions and certain products have on our environment.

The Benefits of Eco-Friendly Packaging
There are many obvious benefits to switching to eco-friendly product packaging for both the manufacturer and consumer. Some of them include the following:

  • Easy to dispose of
  • Biodegradable
  • Reduces carbon footprint
  • Improves your brand image and attracts loyalty
  • It can be recycled and reused sustainably
  • Can save you money
  • Lower shipping costs
  • Versatile and flexible

The Future of Eco-Friendly Products
With eco-friendly products and packaging on the rise, this leaves the future of retail expected to see further changes. However, there are still developments to be made. Although a percentage of individuals surveyed claimed they were happy to pay more for eco-friendly products, Joe Smith director of Greanbase states that “in the short term, I don’t believe eco-friendly products can rival the category leaders due to their price. We are still feeling the effects of the recession and two for £2 bottles will always appeal”. This is evidently something that can be worked on in future though, and the increase in consumer’s moral values and consciousness towards environmental issues is promising and as a result we should see the figures of eco-friendly products and packaging further increasing.
